OUR THANKS TO LeMOULIN BED AND BREAKFAST HOSTS
RIPS would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Schoessow, proprietors of the LeMoulin Bed and Breakfast of Moline, for their graciousness and warm hospitality at our September meeting. They provided a wonderful guided tour of their beautiful home, describing all they have accomplished since last spring. They also drew our attention to the many fine architectural features of their home. The home was built in 1910 for Abraham Stouffer and later became home to Moline Mayor Henry Arp.

Mrs. Schoessow then gave us a taste of the typical high tea served to her guests at 4:00 p.m. She served homemade delicacies and fresh green tea on fine china set on linen. The B&B has gained a reputation for their high tea. The facilities are available for overnight stays with breakfast as well as special events such as celebrations and bridal showers. The Schoessows plan on working on their gardens this spring.

They can be contacted at 309-236-3264. LeMoulin is located at 1326 16th Street, Moline. There is additional information about the home at www.LeMoulinBedBreakfast.com

LANDMARKING PROJECT
RIPS has a new project - preparation of a Landmark application for the house at 625-23rd Street (on the corner of 7th Avenue and 23rd Street). This unusual home, dating from about 1870, is the only Federal-style building in Rock Island.

The application is intended as a learning experience as well. If you'd like to contribute an hour or two of time for research, with guidance as required, contact Diane Oestreich, 788-1845 or oestreich@qconline.com

Each month we will report on results of the research. Last month we heard the results of a review of the abstract, which was lent to us by homeowner Phil Douglas. The abstract provided ideas to direct additional research. Members also viewed abstracts from other properties. The November meeting will include discussion of the defining architectural details of the home. Our project is expected to take several months before being ready for submission to the Preservation Commission.

MINE SUBSIDENCE - AN UNNECESSARY INSURANCE EXPENSE
Are you paying an extra $100 or so annually for your homeowners insurance policy? Take a look at your bill or policy and see if there is a line item called "Mine Subsidence". Depending on the insured value (replacement, not market value) of your home, mine subsidence costs you $50 - $150 per year. In 1979, a state law made it mandatory to include contributions to a "Mine Subsidence Fund" on all property insurance policies within the 34 Illinois counties that had underground coal mines. This insurance does NOT cover land movement from any cause other than underground mines.

Although Rock Island County did have underground mines, none were located in Rock Island in the area between the Rock and Mississippi Rivers. Histories of our city verify that fact as well.

You can waive this insurance and receive a refund or a lower price on your insurance. Call your agent for more details. You can also follow the links at www.minesubsidence.info to see a map showing the location of coal mines in Rock Island County and for more information on Mine Subsidence. The map identifies a mine site in an area of Moline north of John Deere Road near Lowe's.

Mine Subsidence insurance for many is rather like flood insurance when you live on a mountain top. And it's expensive!
