  • Spencer Place

Spencer Place is the name given to the area around 19th Street on an early Rock Island map. One of Rock Island's premier residential areas, Spencer Place contains a series of large homes of varying architectural styles.

Prior to the numbering of Rock Island streets, 7th Avenue was known as Spencer Street. Nineteenth Street, then known as Jefferson, was an elm-lined residential street whose proximity to downtown made it a desirable neighborhood for the families of businessmen, railroad employees, merchants, political figures and professionals.

The buildings on this tour were constructed between 1854 and 1936, with the majority dating to the late 1800s. This time frame gives Spencer Place its distinctive sense of time and place.
