RIPS Membership Meeting & Potluck
Tuesday July 19, 6 pm
Hauberg Civic Center
Our summer potluck took place in the dining room at Hauberg Civic Center. Although initially planned for outdoors, the high 90 degree weather prompted a last minute change to the air conditioned interior of the facility. As a result, we had an excellent attendance and lots of good food and conversation.
Due to the heat we did not go out and walk the grounds. Vintage photos of the landscape were available for those who had not yet see them.
We did discuss some preservation issues and made plans for for the next three months. The August meeting is canceled (it is taking a vacation). Martha Dismer will still publish our newsletter in early August. Ardo and Carolyn Holmgrain volunteered their home for our September meeting.
We discussed the public showing of an hour-long video, “The Greenest Building”, that Diane Oestreich and Linda Anderson saw at a recent preservation conference. We have permission, from the filmmaker, Jane Turville, to show the video to the general public one time as long as we do not charge admission. Our initial thought was that October would be a good time for the showing, but then remembered that Moline Preservation Society is planning their 25th Anniversary dinner for October 14 featuring Jim Peters, Chairman of Landmarks Illinois, as the speaker. It was therefore decided after the meeting (by Linda and Diane) that we would plan for the video showing in November at a location to be determined. Options suggested include Rock Island Public Library (which unfortunately closes at 8PM now), an Augie location, or even City Hall. Other venues will be explored.
A trailer for the movie, which was outstanding, can be seen at:

Diana Alm asked that we take a look at the in-progress new RIPS website and see if we think it’s ready to be substituted for our current one. Look at old site and compare it to new site.
She and Walter Lilius have been moving info to the “new” platform. Some of the links to the city website are no longer valid since the city has updated its website as well. The links will need to be reviewed and updated.<p>
