Preservation Awards and Certificates

2006

2005

2007 will mark of the 20th anniversary of the Rock Island Preservation Society Annual Preservation Awards and Certificates program. The purpose of these awards and certificates is to recognize and commend those individuals who have worked to preserve the original charm and character of a historic home or other historic building, while incorporating necessary improvements which meet modern standards of comfort and safety. We understand that to undertake the task of genuine restoration is indeed a challenge, and those who accept that challenge and perform the task well, should be heartily and publicly commended.

In order to be eligible for an award the home or building must be 50 years old or older and within the city limits of Rock Island. It is expected that the project will be a genuine restoration or renovation of original work. Generally an award is reserved for a major restoration project and is not awarded until the project is complete.

Certificates are awarded to preservation projects of a smaller scale: perhaps the replacement of an ornate balustrade, special fabrication of a feature such as half-round gutters or removing the siding from an originally open front porch. As with an award, the project home or building must be 50 years old or older and within the city limits.

Over the years special projects and preservationists have been recognized as well. Included in this varied category: The Rock Island Argus for its coverage of preservation issues, the City of Rock Island for its brick streets preservation plan and Rock Island Economic Growth Corporation and its Youthbuild program.

The Rock Island Preservation Society wants to be sure all restoration projects in the city are considered for the awards program and actively seeks nominations from throughout the community. If you would like to nominate a property for consideration, please send the project address, the name of the property owner (if known) and a description of the project to Rock Island Preservation Society, P.O. Box 3261, Rock Island, IL 61204-3261.
